Insignia by S.J. Kincaid

Tom is good at one thing - video games. And being good at video games really doesn't get you very far, right? But Tom finds himself recruited by the Pentagonal Spire to train as combatant for World War III because...he's very good at video games.

Perhaps the most well-known book about a boy who is groomed by the government to excel at games is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Ender has a brilliant mind, which makes him the perfect candidate for "war games." The book is action-packed but also deeply philosophical. Card has written numerous books featuring the characters from Ender's Game.

Another great book about a lonely kid who finds a starring role in the virtual world is Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse. This one is written for an adult audience, but many teens will love the scavenger hunt-type mystery set in a future virtual world. Readers may also be interested in Epic by Conor Kostick, where all battles are played out in the arena of video games.
