You're a passionate reader - we can probably assume this to be true if you're viewing a library blog for teens! But are you also a passionate writer? Most of us have our own stories bouncing around in our heads, begging to be freed. They tease us in daydreams and grip us at night in proper dreams; they're a nagging need to doodle on paper and scribble in the margins of notes.
So do
you have a story to tell?
Why not tell one this year during the annual NaNoWriMo! What's that strange word mean? It's short for
National
Novel
Writing
Month, a celebration every year that encourages an increasingly staggering number of authors and would-be authors to write 50,000 words in the span of a month. Will it be something publishable right away? No, but you will have a first draft, and that seems to always be the hardest step. Spend December giving it some space, and then you'll have a rough little rock to polish into a shiny gem for the new year. You've read some amazing stories - now prepare to share one of your own.
NaNoWriMo begins on November 1. October can be spent as a drafting period, dreaming up characters and plots, readying writers to put the pen to paper on November 1! Further information can be found at NaNoWriMo.org. Samma Lynne will be participating this year - some excerpts may be found in the teen desk right outside the Teen Room as November marches onward. She or any of the library staff can point you in the directions for books on the drafting process, books on writing, books on editing, and books on publishing, or just to some great books in general to get the inspiration flowing!
